The Story
Cryptanthus bivittatus 'Ruby' is a compact bromeliad cultivar valued for its flat, rosette-forming foliage in shades of ruby red with green and cream striping. Native species in this group originate from Brazilian rainforests, and this cultivar is commonly grown indoors, forming low clusters up to 15 cm tall and around 20 cm wide. While it occasionally produces small white flowers from the centre of the rosette, the colourful foliage remains the primary feature and intensifies under bright, indirect light.
Care Tips:
- Light – Bright, indirect light enhances foliage colour; avoid harsh direct sun
- Water – Keep slightly moist, allowing the top layer to dry between waterings
- Humidity – Benefits from high humidity; mist or use a humidity tray
- Media – Use a free‑draining, slightly acidic bromeliad mix
- Temperature – Thrives in warm conditions, 18–27 °C
- Fertiliser – Apply diluted liquid fertiliser monthly in the growing season
- Repotting – Repot when offsets crowd the pot, typically every 2–3 years
