The Story

Echinopsis subdenudata f. cristata originates from South America and is the result of a rare fasciation mutation. This unique form develops contorted, rippling fans in place of the species' usual solitary globular stem. An extraordinary collector’s piece, especially in this unusually large form.

Distinctive Features

  • Crested Growth: This specimen showcases a dramatic fan-like crest, with layered folds and undulations that create a remarkable sculptural effect. No two plants are ever the same.
  • Flowers: Produces large, pure white, funnel-shaped flowers that open during the night. Fragrant and ephemeral, they create a powerful contrast against the crested stem.
  • Spination and Texture: Covered with soft, chalky-white spines arranged along the crests’ ribs, adding to its architectural elegance without harshness.

Care Tips

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light or dappled shade. Avoid harsh midday sun to prevent scorching the delicate crest.
  • Water: Water deeply but infrequently. Allow the growing media to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce significantly in winter.
  • Humidity: Thrives in dry conditions; excessive humidity can lead to rot.
  • Media: Use a gritty, fast-draining cactus mix with coarse sand or perlite for airflow and drainage.
  • Temperature: Enjoys warmth between 18–30 °C. Protect from temperatures below 5 °C.
  • Fertiliser: Apply a half-strength cactus fertiliser every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer.
  • Repotting: Repot only when absolutely necessary; large crested plants prefer to remain slightly root-bound and can be fragile when handled.
