The Story

Pachypodium horombense is a distinctive species native to the Horombe plateau of southern Madagascar, where it grows in open, rocky grasslands and seasonally dry habitats. It develops a swollen, bottle-shaped trunk adapted for water storage, topped with a cluster of narrow, glossy green leaves during the growing season. The trunk is covered with protective spines, which deter browsing animals in its native environment. In spring to early summer, mature plants produce clusters of bright yellow, trumpet-shaped flowers that contrast against the grey-green trunk, making it one of the more ornamental members of the genus. During dry periods, it naturally sheds its leaves, entering dormancy until seasonal rains return.

Care Tips:

  • Light – Provide bright light to full sun to support healthy leaf growth and flowering.
  • Water – Water thoroughly during active growth, allowing the soil to dry between watering; keep almost dry during winter dormancy.
  • Humidity – Prefers low humidity with good airflow.
  • Media – Use a very free-draining, sandy or gritty succulent mix to prevent root rot.
  • Temperature – Best grown at 18–30 °C; protect from frost and prolonged cold.
  • Fertiliser – Apply a diluted, low-nitrogen fertiliser during the growing season to support flowering and trunk development.
  • Repotting – Repot every 3–4 years or when the plant outgrows its container, taking care not to damage the root system.

Additional Notes:

  • Known to be toxic
