The Story

Agave isthmensis 'Ohi Raijin' is a cultivated dwarf form of the species Agave isthmensis, native to Oaxaca, Mexico, where the species occurs on dry, rocky hillsides. This compact selection develops tight, rounded rosettes of thick blue-green leaves with pronounced marginal teeth and a short terminal spine. Plants remain very small compared with the species, usually forming clumping colonies as offsets are freely produced. Mature rosettes can eventually flower with tall stalks carrying yellow blooms, after which the individual rosette dies back.

Distinctive Features

  • Textured Leaves: The 'Ohi Raijin' is renowned for its deeply grooved, hammered leaves, creating a mesmerizing three-dimensional effect.
  • Compact Size: This cultivar maintains a relatively compact size, making it suitable for container gardening and smaller spaces.
  • Terminal Spines: Each leaf is adorned with a sharp, dark terminal spine, adding to its dramatic appearance.

Care Tips

  • Light: Provide your 'Ohi Raijin' with bright, indirect light or even some direct sunlight. However, protect it from intense afternoon sun, which can cause leaf burn.
  • Water: Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water sparingly during the growing season (spring and summer) and even less in autumn and winter.
  • Humidity: This agave thrives in average household humidity levels and does not require any special humidity considerations.
  • Temperature: Maintain a temperature range of 18-24°C (64-75°F) for optimal growth. Protect from frost during winter.
  • Fertiliser: Feed your 'Ohi Raijin' with a balanced succulent fertiliser once a year during the growing season.
  • Potting: Use a well-draining cactus and succulent potting mix. Repot every 2-3 years in spring, choosing a slightly larger container each time.
  • Propagation: Propagate through offsets or pups that occasionally form at the base of the plant. Allow the offsets to dry and callus before planting in well-draining soil.
