The Story

Euphorbia antiquorum is a distinctive tree-form succulent native to South Asia, prized for its broad winged stems, architectural branching habit, and unique appearance. Mature plants develop into impressive candelabra-shaped specimens, while younger plants display broad green ribs edged with small spines and seasonal leaves.

This species has been cultivated for centuries and remains one of the most recognisable of the large succulent euphorbias. Easy to grow and highly drought tolerant, it makes an outstanding specimen plant for collectors of unusual succulents.

Care

  • Light: Bright light to full sun.
  • Water: Allow the potting mix to dry between waterings. Reduce watering during winter.
  • Temperature: Warm growing. Protect from frost.
  • Humidity: Not humidity sensitive.
  • Media: Fast-draining cactus and succulent mix.
  • Feeding: Apply a low-nitrogen fertiliser during active growth.

Key Characteristics

  • Stem colour: Bright green
  • Stem shape: Broad winged ribs with scalloped margins
  • Spines: Small paired spines along the rib margins
  • Growth habit: Upright branching succulent forming a candelabra-shaped specimen
  • Plant size: Can eventually exceed several metres when grown in suitable climates
  • Flowers: Small yellow-green cyathia produced along mature growth
  • Difficulty: Easy

Important Information

CAUTION: Like most euphorbias, this plant produces a white milky sap when damaged. The sap can irritate skin and eyes. Wear gloves when handling or pruning and keep away from children and pets.
