The Story

Monadenium ellenbeckii, now correctly classified as Euphorbia bisellenbeckii, is a succulent species native to Kenya and Ethiopia, where it is found growing in semi-arid scrublands and rocky slopes. It is characterised by trailing to decumbent stems arising from a tuberous base, with pronounced ridges and soft spines along the stem flanks. The narrow, lance-shaped leaves are often seasonally deciduous. During the growing season, it produces small cyathia near the stem tips, typically green with purplish markings. The species is adapted to seasonal rainfall and dry, open environments.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Prefers bright filtered light to partial sun
  • Water: Water moderately during the growing season; allow to dry out between waterings
  • Humidity: Performs best in low to moderate humidity
  • Media: Requires a fast-draining mix with added mineral grit or pumice
  • Temperature: Thrives in 18–30 °C; protect from cold below 10 °C
  • Fertiliser: Feed with a diluted balanced fertiliser during active growth
  • Repotting: Repot only when rootbound or when caudex needs more space; avoid disturbing the tuber

Additional Notes:

  • Known to be toxic
