The Story

Euphorbia flanaganii 'Medusa's Head' is a low-growing, mat-forming succulent species native to the Eastern Cape of South Africa, where it inhabits sandy flats and rocky slopes, often partially buried in mineral soils with only the growing tips exposed. The plant forms a swollen, underground caudex from which numerous slender, cylindrical green stems radiate outward in a spiral or circular pattern. This growth form helps it avoid excessive moisture loss in its arid habitat. Small, yellow cyathia emerge near the base of the arms during the growing season, typically in the warmer months.

Care Tips:

  • Light – Requires bright light to full sun for compact, healthy growth
  • Water – Water when soil is completely dry; reduce frequency in cooler months
  • Humidity – Best in dry environments; avoid high humidity and stagnant air
  • Media – Use a sharply draining mix with added sand, grit, or pumice
  • Temperature – Maintain above 10°C; avoid frost and prolonged cold
  • Fertiliser – Feed lightly with a diluted cactus fertiliser during active growth
  • Repotting – Repot when rootbound or when media becomes compacted

Additional Notes:

  • Known to be toxic
