The Story

Euphorbia trigona is an upright, columnar succulent native to central Africa. It develops three-angled stems lined with paired spines and narrow leaves that emerge along the ridges during active growth. This cultivar is the red form of Euphorbia trigona, distinguished by its deep burgundy stems and reddish-tinted leaves, which become more intense in bright light. It is often grown for its architectural shape and tolerance of dry conditions, making it suitable for both indoor and outdoor container culture in warm climates.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Requires bright indirect light to full sun; high light encourages stronger red pigmentation
  • Water: Water thoroughly when the soil is dry; do not allow the pot to remain wet
  • Humidity: Performs best in dry air; avoid high humidity and poor ventilation
  • Media: Use a free-draining cactus or succulent mix with added mineral material
  • Temperature: Ideal range is 20–30 °C; avoid exposure to temperatures below 10 °C
  • Fertiliser: Apply a diluted balanced fertiliser monthly during the active growing season
  • Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when rootbound; handle with care due to spines

Additional Notes:

  • Known to be toxic
