The Story

Maranta leuconeura erythroneura, commonly referred to as the Red Veined Prayer Plant, is a cultivar prized for its vividly coloured foliage. Native to the tropical forests of Brazil, this plant is known for its distinctive leaf movements, folding upwards in the evening and opening again by morning. The bold red venation against the dark green background makes it a notable selection within the Maranta genus.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light; direct sunlight can cause leaf scorch or fading of colours.
  • Water: Maintain consistently moist soil, but avoid waterlogging; allow the top 2–3 cm of soil to dry slightly between waterings.
  • Humidity: High humidity (above 60%) is ideal to prevent leaf curl or browning; regular misting or a humidity tray can assist.
  • Media: Well-draining potting mix rich in organic matter, such as a peat-based mix with added perlite or coarse sand.
  • Temperature: Thrives between 18–27°C; avoid exposure to temperatures below 15°C.
  • Fertiliser: Apply a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser diluted to half strength every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring to early autumn).
  • Repotting: Repot every 1–2 years in spring to refresh the soil and accommodate root growth.
